DAN PHUONG HIGH SCHOOL: SOME SOLUTIONS TO STRAW AFTER HARVESTING TO REDUCE AIR POLLUTION IN AGRICULTURAL AREAS

Bad effects of straw buring on traffic
 I. Introduction
A teacher was teaching when the classroom became full of smoke, which made the class unable to continue the lesson. This happens regularly. Moreover, our teacher has a disease in her respiratory system and the smoke makes the matter worse. Now she doesn’t have good health. Therefore, our group decided to go to the field nearby to find out the cause of the smoke. On the way we saw some  accidents. It was because of the smoke that the visibility was limited and the motorcyclists could not see the road very well. The surrounding areas were full of moke because farmers were burning straw in the field. We realized how harmful is the burning of straw after harvesting, so we decided to choose this topic: “Some solutions to straw after harvesting to reduce air pollution in agricultural areas”.
                                                              Video: Interview

II. Real situation of air pollution as a result of smok
Our research group went to find out the reality in some rice fields and streets in the town nearby as well as took many photographs and made some videos. We saw with our own eyes thick smoke caused by burning straw and its bad effect on people’s lives. We interviewed the people living in surrounding areas. Most of them showed their unpleasant attitude towards straw burning. Dan Phuong district is situated in the suburb of Hanoi, in which there are a lot of rice fields. Recently this area has been under the influence of straw burning during and after the harvest. Agricultural by-products, especially straw, are not recycled. Instead, they  are put on the roads so that they become dry and then they are burned. This makes the surrounding areas full of thick smoke, especially in the afternoon. But why do people burn straw like this?
Straw burned on the road
Nowadays, most farmers do not use straw as a kind of fuel in their homes any longer, so they do not bring them home. But in our opinion, the main reason is that farmers do not have much knowledge of the advantages of straw. Moreover, they are not aware of the danger of environment pollution. There have been many scientific researches on straw showing that straw has great economic benefits which are mentioned in the next part. However, farmers are not told about that and they do not know about the very bad situation of current environment pollution. Harmful effects caused by straw burning are much more serious than people think. Gases released in the process of burning straw such as CO and CO2  are harmful to the environment. Moreover, farmers usually burn straw late in the afternoon, which would increase the level of pollution because at that time the temperature falls, the thick atmosphere tends to cover the area. As a result the smoke can not rise. On wet or windless days the smoke from straw burning diffuses slowly, slowing down the circulation of air molecules in the atmosphere and bringing more harm. To sum up, the consequence of straw burning is environment pollution, an increase in greenhouse effect, climate changing and ecologic imbalance.
Another harmful effect of straw smoke is that it affects people’s health badly, increasing the diseases related to respiratory system such as lung cancer. Furthermore, traffic accidents happen more often because smoke from straw burning limits the visibility and big burning heaps of straw on the road sometimes block the traffic, which also increase the risk of the burning of other things.
A car catching fire from straw burning
People think that burning straw right in the field can make it good fetilizer. Nevertherless, under high temperature some organic substances in the straw may become useless inorganic substances. Burning straw right in the field also makes the land dry because an amount of water evaporates during this process. Burning straw is a waste of raw materials. Instead of being used properly, it is to blame for many problems.

III. Some suggested solutions
In Vietnam, burning straw is a common thing in many provinces such as Ha Noi, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Ha Nam, etc. What to do with straw after harvests is also an urgent matter in many agricultural areas in the South East Asia as well as around the  world. In the hope to contribute to the improvement of the situation, the research group of Dan Phuong High School, Ha Noi would like to suggest some solutions. We think that these solutions may be widely applied not only in Vietnam or in the South East Asia but also in many rice cultivating areas in the world.
1/. The first solution is that we should raise people’s awareness of harmful effects of burning straw as it affects people’s health, contributes to environment pollution and causes many traffic accidents.
Straw as a material to plant mushrooms
Producing fertilizers from straw
2/. The scond solution is that we had better use it as a material to produce fertilizer. After the harvest, farmers should put the straw in the corner of the field. Then they can make a biological substance by mixing water and phosphate in the ratio of 1 to 1, then they pour this substance into the straw to change it into fertililzer. A ton of straw needs about 5 to 10 kilograms of the biological substance. This depends on how long the farmers want the straw to decay. After that, cover the heap of straw with a nilon bag or mud to keep heat. 20 days later, the straw will disintegrate and become organic fertilizer. Making biological substance doesn’t cost much, about 13,000 or 15,000 dong, so it is not difficult for famers to follow this solution. When farmers use this kind of fertilizer, the chemical fertilizer can be reduced by over 30%, but the productivity increases by 10 to 15%. Besides, farmers can sell their straw to the people in the farms where fruit trees are planted or cows are raised.
 Producing building materials from straw
3/. The third solution is that straw can be treated with modern technology. Straw is collected, dried and then put into a pyrolysis furnace to be recycled into biological fuels. One of the products is bio-oil which is used in different fields such as chemical producing, medicine, industry, food producing. It is also used directly in power stations, replacing petroleum to operate engines. Hard products can be used as active coal or fertilizer when they are added with some elements. Straw can be used to keep heat. It is a good insulating material after being processed. Heat from household articles is enough to keep the house warm. The outside straw mortar prevents the house form soaking and makes the walls strong. The inner straw mortar is a special material that helps us balance the humidity and makes airy condition. Using this kind of materials does not do harm to human and the environment. Besides, there are other ways of treating straw such as using it as a buffer for tragile goods and fruits when being transported; using it to produce pulp and power; pressing it into bales of straw (building materials).
If people can carry out the above solutions, burning straw after harvesting can be reduced. As a result, harmful effects of burning straw on environment and people’s health will certainly decrease. Moreover, when straw is used properly, it can raise people’s income, improve the soil, increase the plant productivity, save fuels and materials.

IV. Conclusion
It is clear that burning straw can lead to many problems. Hoever, knowing how to deal with it brings a lot of benefits. To make the situation better we should make farmers change their awareness and all the people have to take responsibility for solving the environment pollution problems.
Our research group hopes that the above solutions will be popularised not only in Vietnam but also in the South East Asia and throughout the word.

The research is carried out by the representatives of three classes of Dan Phuong High School: 11A1, 11A2, 11A9. Mr Ta Dang Thai is our guide. The following is name list of ours:

The environmental pollution in Da Hoi professional village, Bac Ninh,Viet Nam.

The environmental pollution in Da Hoi professional village, Bac Ninh,Viet Nam.

 I. Introduction
To respond APEC "Go green" we, students in class 12A8 Nguyen Van Cu high school, Bac Ninh have done a research on the environmental pollution in Da Hoi, a steel village in Bac Ninh Viet Nam.
                                                  Image 1: Da Hoi village

Image2: The road of Da Hoi village

Da Hoi iron steel village is located on the north bank of Ngu Huyen Khe river, 25 kilometers east of Ha Noi. It belongs to Chau Khe quarter, Tu Son district, Bac Ninh province. Originally, Da Hoi was a metallic mechanical engineering professional village manufacturing household appliances such as knives, scissors, hoes, shovels. Now it has become a centre manufacturing steel with a capacity of three hundred and fifty thousand ton each year.Chau Khe is like a giant steel stove. Its scale is ranked the first or the second in the country’s steel manufacturing scale.
Da Hoi’s steel product is used in every area of Vietnam and it is also exported to other countries such as China and Lao. Da Hoi’s steel manufacturing supplies jobs to the local people and many others from provinces such as Thai Nguyen, Vinh Phuc, etc... The manufacturing and its commercial service helps the residents earn much money and many people in Da Hoi become billionaires.
Besides the benefits this steel village has brought to people, it has caused a huge  environment problem for the local and nearby village people and locations.

II. State and consequences
The development and enlargement of steel works in Da Hoi result in the increase environmental pollution and make the village a giant waste ground. Dirt, smoke, noise and industrial waste are threatening the life of Da Hoi’s people.

  II.1.Dirt and smoke:
People living in Da Hoi and other surrounding areas have to live with dirt and smoke from the steel works and transport. Da Hoi has more than 850 household works so the demand for fuel consumption is considerably high. Each day, Da Hoi uses about 100 tons of coal, 1 ton of wood, a ton of FO oil. Smoke from the casting and laminating stoves with out- of- date technology is discharged directly into the air and makes it polluted seriously.
The results analyzed by the Natural resources and environment service show that the amount of dirt in the residential area is  from twice to three times above the  standard  allowed, the strength of carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide is nearly twice. In  steel casting stoves a lot of dangerous gases, iron dirt, heavy metallic gases are all from five to twenty times above the standards allowed.
Besides the smoke and dirt from the steel works, smoke and dirt from transport is also a problem hard to solve. Heavy lorries, trailers carrying iron and steel  are always on the move. They release dangerous gases and damage the village’s road, making it muddy in rainy reason  and dirty in dry one. The houses and furniture of the people living there are grimed with dust and look black although they are wiped every day. Workers there have a face smeared all over, the clothes and faces of the people especially children who aren’t taken good care of are sticky with dirt. The dangerous smoke and dirt is affecting the people’s health badly every day, every hour. It causes diseases relating eyes, breathing, hearts etc…, declining the living standards of the local people. The aged and small children are the most vulnerable objects of smoke and dirt pollution in the professional village.
Image3: Each day, Da Hoi uses about 100 tons of coal
Image 4: Muddy village’s road in rainy reason
Image 5: Dirty village’s road in dry season
    II.2.Noise pollution:
Noise pollution is also a problem existing in Da Hoi professional village. The works which laminate steel or manufacture nails with old out-of-date machines cause deafening noise when they are operating. The lorries and trailers which move heaven and earth on the village’s road also cause unpleasant noise. It’s very difficult to find quiet space in Da Hoi. Even the schools and the first-aid station are still affected by the noise . This has bad effect on the quality of  the pupils’ studying and the old people’s sleep. People living in such noisy environment get  stressed, hot-tempered and lose calm easily.
Image 6+7: Machines and transport cause the noise pollution

    II.3. Industrial waste
Da Hoi is a recycling steel village. Its source of raw materials is mainly iron in loose bits collected from other provinces in the country. Industrial waste is mainly discarded scrap, iron rust, scrap iron, soil and sand and a great amount of coal ash originating in the manufacture. Industrial waste also includes discharged water containing chemicals and metallic ions, acid steam, alkali which are created from the manufacturing of steel.
This amount of waste product is often dumped in the ponds, lakes, the banks of the Ngu Huyen Khe river and itself, affecting  directly the health of the local people and ones living in the surrounding areas.
The big steel works often transport coal ash and discarded scarp to the bare grounds of the village. Consequently, the quality of the soil environment is becoming worse and worse.

III. Reasons and solutions

III.1.Reasons:
There are some reasons causing the environmental pollution in Da Hoi.

Firstly the steel works intersperse with residential area. The works are situated in the same place where the houses are.
Secondly, each family develops its manufacture separately.

Those who are responsible for the environmental problems may install some technology to reduce the effects of smoke but those who are irresponsible for them do nothing to protect the environment.

Thirdly, most of the steel works are in bad condition, unsettled, narrow and lack of water treating or waste matter systems etc…In addition the employers’ and employees’ cognition and the sense of responsibility for protecting environment is still restricted
Recognizing the state and the effects of environmental pollution the residents, businessmen, and local authority have applied many solutions to minimize them. They have assembled the works in an industrial area on the south bank of Ngu Huyen Khe river, separating it from the residential area.
Some owners of works built the chimneys which are higher than the people’s houses and installed the spouting fog systems (hệ thống phun sương) in the works to restrict smoke, dirt. Others have invested money to replace the old out –of – date machines with the more modern ones.
However these solutions haven’t been applied widely to all the works in Da Hoi. The area of Dahoi’s land is restricted so it’s impossible to assemble all the works in the industrial area. Moreover the industrial area isn’t far from the residential area and it still affects people’s lives  badly. The installation of machines which help minimize the pollution is expensive so many owners of the works can’t afford it and they still have to use the old-out–of–date machines. Many owners are not self-imposed, they don’t voluntarily invest money in modern technology. All the above problems make it challenging to solve the environmental pollution in Da Hoi.

III.2. Solutions:
Audio: Businessman's ideas
“…It’s difficult to solve the problem. There should  have the investment of the authorities in all aspects, each businessman should be self-imposed (etc,…) so that we can improve the environment….”

Video: Students’ discussion

When doing research on solutions to the environmental pollution in Da Hoi, the students in class 12 A8 of Nguyen Van Cu secondary school, have talked to some owners of works, discussed together and proposed some ideas. In our opinion, to solve the problem needs the participation of the authorities, the businessmen and the residents. Firstly, the authorities should supplement the village more area of land to help build a large industrial area which can assemble all the works existing in the residential area. The infrastructure such as roads, bridges should also be built to make the transportation more convenient.
Secondly, there should have an area where waste matter and water are treated before being poured into the environment. Thirdly, the authorities should give more attractive and prior policies to the investment capital so that the businessmen can approach a loan and invest in machines works which have good standards for the environment. Moreover the local authorities and businessmen must discuss to establish adequate requirements for the works, technology and safety for working conditions to minimise the bad effects of the professional village on the environment. There should have strict enforced law in order to warn the people off breaking the environmental protecting rules.
Last but not least, there must be programs which help improve people’s sense of responsibilities for protecting environment, for example opening campaigns to encourage people to plan trees or clean their surroundings and so on and so forth. In sum, the government, businessmen and residents must join hands to solve the problems of environmental pollution in Da Hoi professional village. Hoping that in the future Da Hoi will develop more and more and become one of the professional villages which contribute to the efforts to protect environment.

I. Mục tiêu

Status and solutions to reduce waste pollution at restaurants in Hoan Kiem district

I. Introduction and the aims of the research

Good morning lady and gentlemen! We are students from Viet Duc high school in Hanoi. We are so proud of being a child in the family of Viet Duc high school which has long tradition of history and development. In these years, generation from generation in our school hasn’t stopped trying, practicing and improving ourselves.
We are now studying an issue which draws lots of attention from human beings. It is environment pollution and the fight against global climate change. As we all know, our beloved green planet is being destroyed seriously because of pollution, resources depletion, especially global warming, resulting to sudden changes in climate and extremely severe consequences in many parts of the world.
The topic that our group determinedly discusses is: “Status and solutions to reduce waste pollution at restaurants in Hoan Kiem district”.

We are present at a really renowned restaurant in Hanoi, a unique cuisine address named Quan An Ngon,
18 Phan Boi Chau Street
. Now, let’s go inside with me and meet its manager.

II. Restaurant Introduction

According to the manager, Quan An Ngon 18 Phan Boi Chau Street not only gathers specialties of three regions but also impresses the customers by its special display. The old garden has been arranged and re-decorated in a pure Vietnamese style, giving diners a sense of eating in a traditional market crowded with dozens of dishes from all regions of the country. Hanoi lovers, nostalgic people, even young generations and foreigners can not forget this cuisine restaurant. There are people coming to Quan An Ngon to search for old memories, others to discover the three regions’ food culture or simply, taste traditional dishes gloatingly. Gourmets and foreign tourists are even ready for making a queue and waiting for their turn to be served with their favorite dishes. Many people have come here for several times and then introduce to their friends this address.

Quan An Ngon 18 Phan Boi Chau Street is the only address to reach one of the top 5 special and tasty restaurants in Viet Nam, voted by the Miele Guide Magazine of Singapore on October, the 8th, 2010. This is the contest whose contestants are selected from the best restaurant list in Asia voted by leading food and beverage experts.

Simple dishes but “food brands” of all regions in Vietnam are carefully selected to serve here. All the quintessence of Hanoi cuisine converges at Quan An Ngon. It serves the same dishes street vendors sell: the shellfish soup and vermicelli, noodles and grilled meat, crab rolls, spring roll, flan and pan cakes. Of special note are dishes from the central region and the south: Hue beep noodle soup, Hue pancakes, fine rice vermicelli, grilled shrimp paste, and grilled meat roll.

III. Pollution problems caused by the restaurant
As far as we know, there are always a huge number of dirty dishes needing to be washed every minute in crowded restaurants and Quan An Ngon has no exception. In order to wash up an enormous number of dishes, employees have to use lots of detergents which damage badly to the environment and contaminate the soil. Moreover, the amount of garbage and wastewater is very high. Garbage, in general, consists of pollutants in different forms which are toxic and extremely dangerous when not carefully-treated before discarding into the environment. Therefore, garbage should be classified and treated properly.

Detailed status at Quan An Ngon
18 Phan Boi Chau Street
:

-         The number of bowls and dishes is very large because the restaurant serves all day, with three main meals for a huge number of customers. Washing happens in a narrow section and close to the cooking area. Finished dishes collected from tables are washed quickly at different sinks with lots of detergents.
-         Looking at the sinks, we can easily realize that the majority of wastewater has black or milky color, bubbly and smelly and doesn’t reach prescribed standards.
-         Wastewater from the cooking area flows through the garbage fenders, and then the greases separation section, garbage hole and run into the sewer. However, it can be seen that the garbage fenders’ size is too sparse to filter as required standards.
-         The amount of garbage one day from a restaurant is very large and importantly, it isn’t classified into trash bags.
-         The restaurant doesn’t have a suitable waste treatment system to ensure the garbage quality before discarding into the common sewers of the city.

IV. Solutions
  1. Proposed solutions for all restaurants.
-         Carrying out media campaigns, radio programs, delivering leaflets and posters to manufacturing bases and restaurants is a need.
-         Business units should invest money for saving the environment.
-         They should build up prescribed waste treatment system and shouldn’t discard untreated garbage into the environment.
  1. Proposed plans for Quan An Ngon
  1. Physical treatment method:
Wastewater consists of insoluble elements in suspended form. To split these elements up, people often use mechanical methods such as filtering through garbage fender or trash screen. Then, sediment is made by gravity or centrifugal force.
+ Garbage fender:
Before the wastewater of the restaurant runs into the treatment system, it flows through garbage fender. Here big sized rubbish such as rags, cans, or nilons will be retained. By doing so, the pipeline and channels do not get stuck. This is an important step to ensure safety and smooth processes for the whole system. However, the garbage fender should be re-made with smaller meshes.
+ Deposition sand:
Deposition sand tank is designed to separate insoluble inorganic impurities with the size ranging from 0.2 mm to 2mm from wastewater. Thus, the pipeline don’t get stuck by sand and the following process will happen smoothly.
+ Deposition tank:
It stores suspended sediment particles available in wastewater from tank 1 or those created from coagulation flocculation process or biological treatment process in tank
  1. Limitation of detergents with high concentration of toxin
At present, there are new detergents with limited toxic elements available on the market. They are safer to the environment and less bubbly so that it can help for water saving.
  1. Proposed steps for effective washing
-         Step 1: Using specific washing towels to wash away a part of leftovers and fat layers on dishes.
-         Step 2: Using hot water to wash dishes before washing again with cold water and detergents.
-         Step 3: Using new detergents with limited toxic and foaming elements and safe for the users and the environment.

V. Difficulties when applying these methods.
- Funding for building up a prescribed waste treament system is high, which not all the restaurants can afford.
- Finding detergents with limited toxic and foaming elements is hard because this issue hasn’t been widely researched and applied in Vietnam.
- If the restaurant has budget to construct deposition tanks and waste treatment system, it also takes time, which affects its daily business.
With the hope of contributing our little effort to the fight against environment pollution and global warming, we warmly welcome all the concerns and join-hands from all of you.
